Big Asparagus

Big Asparagus

We have been getting one asparagus at a time until night before last. That night we got enough to make a side dish for my wife and me. The really great thing was that the asparagus were huge. Some were as thick as my thumb. This is the first year to actually harvest them. Last year, being the first year, we let them grow into ferns. We did use some of the ferns for decoration.

The weather has been warm and wet lately and it is making everything grow. Last night we had spinach and spring onions to put on our tacos. There are enough collards from the fall planting to pick for tonight. All of the salad greens, spring greens, and sugar peas are doing quite well.

I was concerned that the greenhouse plants would not be big enough to plant by good Friday. They are big enough to plant now. Last year I watered with Vigoro. This year they are watered with compost tea. A pillow case is filled with compost and tied. The compost is changed every week. The spent compost goes back in the newest compost pile.

I Missed my Garden (and my Wife)

I Missed my Garden (and my Wife)

I spent last week in Ecuador. You can buy 20 delicious tree tomatoes there for $1. The indigenous people still plant their milpas. The food is wonderful. I still missed my garden, my greenhouse and my wife. My wife took care of the greenhouse. I lost several flats of plants; but I don’t think that was her fault. The rest of the stuff is doing well and I think it will be ready to go in the ground by good Friday.

Of the crucifers I planted, the broccoli and Brussels sprouts are doing well, the cabbage has disappeared. The spinach had grown so large we had to cook it. Sugar peas are 2” tall. Everything has come up except carrots and beets. Mustard and arugula (from last fall) has started going to seed. The blueberries have started to leaf out. Blackberries are leafed out. The grapes have swelling buds. The paw paws are another story.

The ones I bought from Burgess last year were dead when I got them. The ones I got from Stark brothers were supposed to ship in the spring; but I came in one day to find them on the front porch. I planted them. It is a little early to tell how they will do. The smallest one still feels supple, the larger is stiff; but maybe that is because it is larger. I love spring.

Rain Changes

Rain Changes

Today (Feb 28) was the day I intended to plant cabbage, broccoli and Brussels sprouts. I had a row in the garden ready except for raking of the excess leaves. Instead I am watching the rain. It is only supposed to go to 38 degrees tonight so they would have one night in the ground to adjust before the freezing weather came back. Tomorrow night through Wednesday night the weather report calls for freezing weather. I guess I will wait until Thursday to plant out. I have been leaving the whole flats outside during the day to “harden off” the plants. They seem to like the rain.

I worked in the greenhouse this morning repotting a lot of the plants that are getting leggy. The dill is especially leggy. At least the rain barrels are filling up. I was afraid I would have to use tap water for the plants.

The sugar peas and onions are finally coming up. The fall planted spinach, which had quit growing has started growing again. I could have picked some this morning; but the ground is so wet I was afraid I would pull it up. Likewise with the mustard and collards. They are big enough to pick; but sometimes they get pulled up when the ground is so wet.
